COLLEGES THAT MEET 100% OF FINANCIAL NEED
(OR CLOSE TO IT)
Before one starts to claim that college is too expensive, he or she needs to investigate all of the options available. There are colleges that meet 100% of a student's financial need, which may include grants, scholarships, and/or low-interest loans. The following two links will take you to list of colleges that awarded 90% or more of need-based-aid to students.
GRANTS
Grants are "financial aid, often based on financial need, that does not need to be repaid (unless, for example, you withdraw from school and owe a refund)" (www.studentaid.ed.gov). Click on the following topics/links to find out more.
Federal Student Aid PIN
To apply for FASFA (the next link), you and a parent/guardian must have a PIN number. Therefore, you should both apply for a PIN ASAP to ensure that you have the PINs to complete your FASFS.
FAFSA
YOU MUST START HERE (after you have your PIN). The FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. EVERYONE must complete this application (yes, even if you won't qualify for financial need). You can complete your FASFA starting January 1 of your senior year. You should apply as soon as you can because the funding is limited; although you may qualify for financial need, if you apply to late to money may not be there.
HELP with the FAFSA
Use this link to reach the "Ultimate FAFSA Resource Guide." Use the trusted sites in this guide to help you navigate the FAFSA and the world of federal student aid.
The basic eligibility requirements for grants.
Independent or Dependent - Who's income determines your financial eligibility?
Thinking about claiming yourself as a "independent" from your parents to get more aid? Well, you probably cannot. Even if your parents do not claim you on their taxes, you must meet certain criteria to qualify as "independent." If you do not meet the specific guidelines to qualify as "independent" you will continue to use the financial information of your parents/guardian until you are 24 to complete the FASFA. However, there are exceptions.

QUESTIONS TO ASK COLLEGE ADMISSION COUNSELORS
The following questions represent a collection from various sources and myself. I apologize that I did not keep a list of the outside sources that some of the questions originated, but some are questions that I have accumulated over the years as my own children and previous students have applied to colleges/universities. Nevertheless, please read over the following questions to identify what you feel you and/or your parents/guardians would like to ask before you make a life-changing decision.
